Frans Cornelis, niederländischer Physiologe, * Tilburg 27. 5. 1818, ✝ Utrecht 24. 3. 1889; wurde 1847 Professor in Utrecht, zunächst als Ophthalmologe (bis 1862), dann als Physiologe. Seine wissenschaftliche Tätigkeit erstreckte sich zuerst auf physiologisch-chemische Themen, sodann v. a. auf die physiologische Optik, auf die Augenbewegungen, auf die »mouches volantes« (entoptische Wahrnehmungen), auf die Verwendung prismatischer Gläser zur Schielkorrektur. Donders unterschied als Erster zwischen Übersichtigkeit und Alterssichtigkeit, also zwischen Augenfehlern mit abnormer Brechung und solchen mit eingeschränkter Akkommodation. Auch die Korrektur des Astigmatismus durch Zylindergläser geht auf Donders zurück.
